This year's picnic took on an entirely different meaning. Because of the terrorist attacks just a few days before, the picnic provided us with a chance to come together as a community, to talk to each other, and share our fears and concerns. Many of San Jose's finest were also in attendance at the picnic. Many of whom were in the process of being transferred to New York City to help with the relief efforts or were waiting for their reserve unit to be called up.
I would like to thank all of you who attended the picnic, who listened while individuals worried about family members that are in the military and consoled those who could not comprehend these obscene acts.
If you haven't given blood or made a donation, it's still not too late. Blood and platelet donors are needed to help the victims of this national tragedy and to replenish the nation's supply. Call the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or America's Blood Centers at 1-888-BLOOD-88 to schedule an appointment.
To donate money to the Red Cross for assisting victims of the attacks, call 1-800-HELP-NOW or visit their web site at http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html.

In case of rain, this event will be cancelled.
No one should be cold during the upcoming winter months. Some people aren't able to turn on a furnace or heater to get warm when the temperature drops near or below freezing.
Rosemary Gardens residents will have an opportunity to help those in need this winter stay a little warmer.
On Saturday November 10th, the same day as our monthly Recycle Saturday, we will be collecting gently used and clean blankets, coats and sweaters. Our donations will be given to Sacred Heart Community Service, a local non-profit, non-denominational organization helping to provide all residents with basic needs and encouraging self-sufficiency. Donations must be clean and in good condition.
PLEASE NO ELECTRIC BLANKETS!
Place your donations of blankets, coats and sweaters in a plastic bag. Clearly label this bag as "Warmth Drive Donation", and place them on the curb next to your regular monthly recyclables. We will have a special truck and volunteers collecting your donations. Volunteers and trucks please meet at 1312 Forrestal Ave. at 8:00 a.m.

Thank you for opening your heart to those in need.

CONGRATULATIONS!
HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY to Millie Genaro of W. Rosemary St. Since buying her home in 1947, Millie and her dog Buffy have made many friends in Rosemary Gardens. An avid Giants and 49'er fan, Millie keeps young cheering for her favorite team.
Remember to turn the clock back an hour on Sunday, October 28th!
This is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
RGNA members will be receiving replacement batteries for their smoke detectors. If you haven't received yours by October 27th, please call the Message Center at 441-RGNA (7462).

The marathon will be taking place on Sunday, October 28th, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Our neighborhood will once again be blocked off during these times. San Jose Police will be present to direct traffic exiting and entering the neighborhood.
All questions and complaints should be directed to Fawna Ferguson of San Jose Cultrual Events, 277-8730.
On the night of August 7th, the Rosemary Gardens neighborhood joined thousands of other neighborhoods across the United States in giving crime a "going away" party. Residents locked their doors, turned on their lights, and joined their neighbors in an Ice Cream Social hosted by the RGNA. Also in attendance were members of the San Jose Police Department and the firefighters from our local fire station #5, courtesy of firefighter Jeff Riely.
I would like to thank our volunteers who helped make this event a success:
Barbara Burgess - Charlie Chew - Kevin Farmer - Ransom Fields - Cindy Fota - Joseph Fota - Vita Fota - Aubree Guancione - Gabe Hurtado - Juan Hurtado - Todd Lahaye - Dan Lewerenz - Holly Lewerence - Melanie Mauca - Marisa McElmurry - Judy McQuay - Kenneth Mitchell - Liz Moscato - Gregg Ott - Michelle Riddle - Carol Rivera - Sophie Sahines - Roger Wharton - Luke Zagar - Susie Zagar
Oh, and to answer the question of what happened to the remaining 3 gallons of ice cream and whip cream topping, they were given to fire house #5 who assured me that Jeff would get at least one bowl.
Has traffic in the neighborhood increased?
Do you seem to have more cars zipping down your street than before?
The RGNA has just learned that Bachrodt Elementary has instructed parents to enter the neighborhood, travel up Forrestal, and drop off or pick up their children on Sonora Ave. rather than using the school drop off located on Keoncrest Ave. San Jose Unified School District made this decision without informing or consulting the RGNA.
If you are upset or unhappy with the decision of San Jose Unified School District to direct more traffic into our neighborhood, contact Cecilia Huffman at (408) 535-6602 and register your complaint. Together we can make a difference.

Answers to questions and concerns from the neighborhood:
1. Can other people park in front of my house?
The street is public property and legally registered cars can be parked on the street for up to 72 hours and then they need to be moved. Cars parked for more than 72 hours can be reported to Code Enforcement at 277-5305. Car owners, most houses can accommodate two cars parked in front. If you must park in front of someone else's home, be considerate, don't park in the middle. Share the parking areas.
2. How do I get one of those cool RGNA t-shirts I saw at the picnic?
Become a picnic volunteer. For the individuals who volunteer their time and energy to help make the picnic a success, a "thank you" is given in the form of a t-shirt.
The tragic events of September 11th came less than a week before our 8th annual RGNA picnic. While we respect the wishes of the people who wanted to stay home with family that weekend, many of us felt a need to get out in the fresh air and come back together as a community.
The RGNA would like to thank Court Majusiak for his efforts in organizing and collecting $250 in donations for the American Red Cross. He also made the small American flags for everyone at the picnic and the red, white and blue ribbons for those who donated in the name of the RGNA.
